Biographical Information
Mr. Dean grew up in Knox, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 2006. He taught instrumental music for 5 years in Pana, Illinois before coming to Utica. He has spent the last 11 years teaching instrumental music in the North Fork School District. Mr. Dean teaches 6th Grade Beginning Band, Middle School Band (7/8), High School Band (9 - 12), History of Rock, and Guitar Classes. He also directs Marching Band, MS Jazz Band, HS Jazz Band, and Solo and Ensemble Music.
Beginning Band
Beginning Band is the first band class offered in North Fork Schools. It is for students in 6th grade wishing to learn how to play a band instrument and read music. The class meets every day during 4th period. Students are expected to have an instrument and band book. Beginning Band performs 2 concerts per year. Holiday (December) and Spring (May).
Middle School Band
Middle School Band is for students in 7th or 8th grades. MS Band students should have already completed a year of Beginning Band. If a student did not complete a year of Beginning Band then lessons must be arranged through the band director to catch up. MS Band students will perform at 4 concerts and 1 football game throughout the school year. Fall, Holiday (December), Winter (March), and Spring (May).
High School Band
High School Band class is for students in 9th - 12th grades. The class meets during 9th period every day. Students perform as a marching band in the fall and a concert band the remainder of the year. Students perform 4 concerts per year. They include: Fall Concert, Holiday Concert (December), Winter Concert (March), and Spring Concert (May). Students are expected to already be able to play an instrument and read music. It's a fun time!
Guitar Class 1 & 2
Guitar class is for high school students in grades 9 - 12 wishing to learn how to play a guitar. The class is broken into two semesters. You may take just the first semester for an introduction or you can take the entire year to get more experience. Subjects such as basic guitar types/parts, basic music theory, and tuning are taught. Playing styles such as chord strumming, picking, and music reading are taught. Students taking guitar class are expected to have their own 6-string guitar.
History of Rock and Roll
History of Rock is a music history class for students in grade 9 - 12. Students study the artists and music that were involved with the development of popular music in America for the last 70 years. Students receive grades through the use of quizzes on Progress Book and occasional "rock review" papers.
